Natural earth pigments on bark.
Born in Mornington Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Roughsey was an important cultural figure who developed his artistic practice after being schooled on a Presbyterian mission before returning to his homelands. Following exposure to Yirrkala barks he and his older brother Lindsay, developed an artistic style of their own based on traditional Lardil stories painting silhouetted figures.
Trees suitable for bark are uncommon are on the southern Gulf peninsula so were supplied by pilot Percy Trezise whom Roughsey became friends in 1962. Percy would bring them from near Cairns thus establishing a successful artistic collaboration that lasted many years.
