Tribal Art London partner of Decorative Art Fair selects contemporary art gallery for first time.

Bay  Gallery Home is an contemporary Aboriginal art gallery based in Tetbury, Cotswolds exhibiting paintings, interiors and artefacts.

Tribal art London is the UK’s leading fair devoted to ethnographic and tribal art from indigenous communities around the world.

Bay Gallery Home’s owner Alexandra O’Brien sources  artwork from several communities across Central  Australia, Western Desert and the Tiwi Islands. Often travelling down the dusty desert roads to the artists’ Country reconnecting with them while seeking out special works to bring to the UK.

Alongside 40 new paintings from her most recent trip will feature at the show alongside artefacts and artworks collected by music industry mogul David Munns OBE, who worked with superstar bands including The Rolling Stones and U2 during a long and successful career.

Ms O’Brien, who founded her gallery in 2008, described Mr Munns’ collection of carved, wooden sculptures, vendetta spears as well as an important painting by Cassidy Tjapaltjarri Possum (Clifford Possum’s brother) as “an ethnographic study of artefacts from Arnhem Land and the Tiwi lslands.”  She added:  “they are worth further study for the intricate ochre painting and etchings sharing ancient narratives and sacred iconography.”

O'Brien,  founder of Bay Gallery Home:

Bay Gallery Home is thriled to be exibiting at Tribal Art London as the first contemporary art gallery invited to exhibit.  We recently went to Australia to source paintings for this art fair which we will sell alongside David Munns OBE’s artefacts and the astonishing Cassidy Napaltjarri Possum painting created in memory to his famous half-brother Clifford Possum following his passing.

David Munns OBE:

“I built up my Aboriginal art collection over several years.  My philosophy to collecting has always been to buy what I liked being guided by experts at Lawson-Menzies, Australia.  I love every piece I bought. Due to ill health and my career no longer requiring a lot of travel I have sought Alexandra’s expertise in making sure every piece goes to a home who will love it as much as I do."

Victoria Rogers,  Tribal Art London, Director:

"We were delighted to welcome Bay Gallery Home as the first contemporary art gallery to join our fair.  Their presence marks an exciting dialogue between contemporary creativity and the traditions represented by our specialist tribal art dealers. This expansion reflects our vision of creating a space where ancestral traditions and innovative expressions of the past meet, enriching the experience for collectors and visitors.”

PRESS RELEASE - BAY GALLERY HOME

Bay  Gallery Home represents Central Desert Aboriginal art from their Cotswold based art gallery.  Alexandra O’Brien moved to Sydney Australia as a young child returning to the UK 26 years ago.

Bay Gallery Home has represented bold, beautiful paintings based on Aboriginal Dreamtime mythology and culture, featuring the landscape, plants and animals found in the Australian Outback. The gallery represents a large number of artists including established and a selection of new generation artists:  the “ones to watch”.

The gallery’s relationship with the Central  Australian Aboriginal artists was established over 16 year ago after being asked to represent them in the UK.  The majority of artists Bay Gallery Home represents are from Aboriginal owned art centres. Each artist is directly remunerated for the original purchase of artwork that has bearing on the mobility, educational, health and work opportunities of isolated communities.

By exposing the culture to a broader international audience, Bay Gallery Home contributes to the debate about archaeology, horticulture, botany, anthropology and the preservation of ancient & indigenous cultures.

O'Brien,  founder of Bay Home  Gallery:

“Since moving to the Cotswolds from London to establish the only dedicated Aboriginal art gallery in the UK we have been moved by the profound affinity for the artwork from people all over the UK.  Hence our desire to take it further by creating ‘My Country’ the worlds first Aboriginal interiors collection.”

“I visit Australia around once a year to choose works.  Although I have a huge intuition for the artworks I curate, the paintings are also chosen for the quality of the art and where the artist is in their career.  The ethos of the art gallery is to sell affordable art accessible to as many people as possible.”
